Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, the patron of the NS programme, has promised "zero deaths" in NS camps.
What is his remedy?
He said “If there are sick trainees, they (camp commandants) must take action immediately and send them to the nearest hospital. Even if it’s found to be just a normal fever, it doesn’t matter. It’s better for them to do that than to have something regrettable happen later.”
This is a completely different tune compared to the insensitive and uncaring remark made by the Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai who suggested that it might be too 'expensive' to send trainees for full medical check-up.
Najib said that camp commandants “have to be more proactive and hands-on”.
His promise is welcoming to parents. However, is Najib willing to be held responsible if there is another unfortunate acccident took place? Is he willing to propose the scrapping of this compulsory programme?
I hope both Najib and Lee Lam Thye will not continue to pass on the buck because it has to stop somewhere.

DPM Najib, cannot pay NS trainees life, what is held resonsible, no use.
Here are some ideas to improve the NS Camp Comandant and Instructors.
1) Professionals Comandant and Instructors.
2)Effective Leadership Skills
3)Physically and Mentally fit Comandant and Instructors (not what I have seen and meet.)
4)Good attributes like integrity, committment, accountability and emphathy.
5)Ensure all Comandant and Instructors possess skills and knowledge in Life Saving or survivor ( a must and compulsory.
6)All instructors and Comandant shall pass phyiscal test before they can start their responsibility.
Today it is observe that most of the instructors and comandant are not in permisible physical conditon and they probably can save himself, what about dsaving others??

Its a poorly planned program with national integration as an after thought. Too many parties affected and therefore the program must be continued. after being criticise for putting his fat cats interest ahead of human lives, now the same person is targetting for zero deaths as a more justifiable reason for NS.
Damn, I can target to fly to the sun but we all know it cant be done. Targets wont help if there are more body bags coming out from this NS program.
NS my NS what is the policy maker resposibility of these. Many unwanted case had happen too many too often. Rape , food poison , death etc you name it you got it. SCRAP THE WHOLE PROGRAMME FOR GOODNESS SICK!!
Empty promise from top ruler and YB Lee just make it worse.
I thought the point of NS is to toughen up youngsters to be "soldiers" if needed. But because of poor execution Najib is now at a point where he wants them to be sent to the hospital at the slightest sign of illness. So tell me what's the whole point of NS then?
I say scrap the whole darn thing and have programmes at school level instead. At least it would be in a more controlled environment and the gov has 11 years to work with the students.
Make it voluntary rather than mandatory, let the parent decide .

cant agree with you more on the second point. There are so many ways to organise programs while they are still in formative schooling years. I have some ideas to share in the Forum which is being organised by Haris.
