The grand old man of Malaysia strikes again! Venting his anger at Najib's decision to liberalize the economy, he claims that non-Malays, and particularly the Chinese, were the real masters of the country.
“Because they (the Malays) are willing to share their country with other races, the race from the older civilisation of more than 4,000 years and who are more successful, as such today whatever they have now is also being taken away from them,” he wrote in what appeared to be a reference to the Chinese community.
Mahathir anticipated that “with this article I am sure to be branded a racist by the non-Malay racists”.
“But if they are willing to accept the truth they can compare the sacrifices of the Malays who are the original owners of this land with their sacrifices for the interests of the country.”
He argued that the way forward for peace and progress was for the distribution of wealth in the country to be fair even if unequal.
I thought only Abdullah was a flip-flop prime minister. But it is proven today that almost all UMNO leaders, including Dr M, were masters of flip-flop. Dr M once said that this government should appreciate the contribution of the Chinese community. This community did not ask for any grant or subsidy from the government.
Many of them worked hard to send their children to overseas for further studies when higher education opportunities were scarce in the country. A great number of small businessmen I know are now facing a daunting financial challenge from the ongoing global economic crisis. Many of them invested their entire life savings into their business, fully aware that they must work extremely hard to help themselves.
If Chinese were the real masters, we would not have so many 'Malay-dominated institutions' (as claimed by Berita Harian) and we do not need to continue begging for places in the local universities or study grants/scholarships. The vernacular schools would have been flushed with money to continue upgrading their worn out and over stretched facilities due to high density.
I am afraid Dr M is referring to some Chinese as the masters of this country. But some of these masters were your cronies. You made them rich and powerful and gave them public contracts to help them to get where they are today. Some of them had helped you to even pick the right judges to hire and fire. The rest of us, Chinese, are just struggling to make ends meet. How can we be your masters?
The rest of us dare not even raise our voice or react when abused and physically assaulted by officers from your 'Malay-dominated institutions'.
Let me tell you the truth why many Chinese, Indians and Malays were able to find a common ground in their political struggle today. It is because they now realize that the 50% wealth equity is in the hands of a selected few and not in the hands of most Chinese.
Yes, I support your call for a fairer distribution of wealth. Can we start with your super rich sons? If no, please do not tell us to take you seriously. Perhaps Dr. Mahathir would like to go over the list to see if there are any individuals who had been able to enrich themselves obscenely during his terms as PM and if there are, then to ask them to redistribute their wealth back to the bumiputras who had been so unjustly deprived (or taken away) of their entitlements because the government of the day choose to enrich certain individuals???
Yes, the list also confirms that non Malays do hold a disproportionate amount of wealth of the nation. Would Dr Mahathir like to ask them how they were able to accumulate such extensive wealth??? Was it through their hard work and sacrifices that they had to undertake in order to acquire such wealth. Perhaps, Dr. M would like to confirm with them that their wealth was not acquired by questionable means!
RM36-46 billion is a hugh proportion of the nation's wealth and it is in the hands of a mere 40 individuals. So, is this what Dr Mahathir means when he says that the Chinese are the real masters of the country. With such wealth, they would be able to exercise significant control over the country's economy and as such would be able to a certain extent dictate to the government of the day, if they so choose to do!
Did Dr M. realise or was he trying to keep hidden that the fact that only 40 individuals holds the major portion of the nation wealth when he wrote the article?
When he choose to play the racial card that the Chinese are the masters, he had dishonestly tried to portray that the wealth were held by the Chinese in general and as such, tried to infuriate the Malays into a fit of anger thinking that they were in danger of losing control over the country's assets.
The fact remains that only a very small number of Chinese or non-Malays are extremely wealthy (perhaps with the active participation of the government of those days). The remaining proportion of Chinese or non-Malay population in Malaysia are not so well off with a significant proportion of these individuals struggling to survive under the current economic crisis.
If Dr. M thinks that those wealth held by these 40 individuals are recklessly extreme and are not comfortable with such reality, then, perhaps he should have seek redress against them for acquiring such indecent wealth by whatever means he could think of (for all I care) when he was PM. It is still not too late for him to instigate a compulsory acquisition of those individual's wealth by the state or by whatever means he can think of! These wealth could then be redistributed - perhaps then he will be dead happy.
Dr. Mahathir, when you do write in future, try to be a bit more honest in your facts. If you are not willing to be 100% truthful in your writings, then, warn the readers first, by including a disclaimer or indication of your intentions. Half-truths, incomplete truths, intentional diversion or misleading facts are the staple food of a person with an agenda who had something to hide.
Also, there are the Malays who had over a short period of time been endowed with enormous wealth. These rich individuals should willingly redistribute their wealth back to the real bumiputras in order to show their gratitude for such windfalls while at the same time alleviate the plights of the poor Malays.

We do notice that Mokhzani Mahathir is listed at no. 16 and Eleena Azlan Shah is at no. 35. Perhaps, these rich individuals too can help the poor Malays by volunteering to distribute their wealth for the benefit of the nation. These are leaders of the nation and it would be a wonderful gesture by them if they willingly release their wealth for the nation's poor...then, who knows, the rest of the individuals on the richest list may find it duty bound to do likewise. Actually, he himself is not a Malay. He used to claim that he was a Pakistani. But then, Pakistan was not existed until 1947. He was born in 1925. Besides, his ancestor's hometown, Kerala is not even located in Pakistan.
In fact, majority of our former prime ministers are not 100% Malays. Tunku has a Thai mother, Tun Hussein is a descendant of a Turk and Mahathir's is an offspring of Indians from Kerala.

There are many Malaysian of various races who still love you and respect you. As a stateman, your comments should unite all Malaysian and not divide us. As time passes by I still hope that Malaysian of all races will remember you as a great stateman and not otherwise. I also hope to tell my grand children about you. We did not have to give the immigrants citizenship. We were already somewhat self ruling by 1955, and could have just waited out like Brunei, who were spared from giving up citizenship unnecessarily. It would have been adequate to give PRs and avoid the social contract. After all the majority of immigrants were brought here by the British not by our request. Together with orang asli, we have been on this land since long ago, not a mere 3-4 generations. Their issues with us (if any) are none of your business and are not the same as your issues. Who we accept as one of us, including an Indian descendant is also none of your business. Yes you should not pay for the sins of your forefathers, dont blame us, blame them. The real masters of this country are the powerful political and economic elites who wield considerable influence over our everyday lives through the institutions of government and business. It is no secret they will align themselves to protect and further their own self interest, with crumbs to the rest of the populace. They are Malay, Chinese and Indian mainly. Not from any single particular ethnic community. Some of them practice the politics of hate and deceit. Some practice the business of near monopolies and crony business. Some inherit the family legacy, some sweat long and hard for it. Some are publicly visible, some are self effacing. All are masters of survival and their particular craft. Dr M and sons belong to this elite group, straddling both politics and business. They are part of the master class. People, open your eyes and see clearly. Race is but a red herring.

To me, many Chinese owned company doesn't like to employ Malays because of the stigma that they are lazy and always wanted more or wanted more handouts. These stereotyping of Malay must change but then again, if our so called leaders advocates handouts as a privilege, you can't really blame others.

I earn a good salary, but I chose not to spend excessively. I wont stinge on donations for a good cause, or shirk my duty to give back to God only a portion of what belongs to Him. I shop at sales and get my basics from FOS, and ocassionally, I give myself a treat.
Am I rich? Well, I am comfortable. I am reasonably geared, as I hve taken loans to buy a few properties. I leveraged with the hope that one day, the few thousands i put into an apartment will grow to be much more. I take advantage of the EPF investment scheme and placed my money with unit trusts and my money grew modestly, not much.
I shared all my understanding about retirement funding and investments with my colleagues, malays included. I shared about why it is important to practise delayed gratification. However, our lifestyle choices are so different, as a result of which, my money is spent on acquiring assets, whereas many of my malay colleagues spent their money on consumables, even to the extent to borrow from bank rakyat or coops to spend.
Tun is barking up the wrong tree. His motives for the piece is not noble at all, shame on you. It appears maybe the agenda now is to unite the Malays at all cause, hence the racial slurs at the chinese, and with Tun's IQ, I am sure he knows he is talking rubbish.
The malays are not rich, because of the system. Because leaders like Tun want quick fixes. Instead of teaching Malays about financial planning and trained them to be financially savvy, he decides to create instant millionaires.
By the way, I am not rich. I hve 3 kids, and I know no matter how well they do at school, they will not get scholarships. The money I need to spend to give them an overseas education would cost more than a million ringgit. I save now because I know my kids are depending on me.
Mahathir should rein his horse and shut his crap for once and for all. The only Malaysian PM who had compassion and love for all was the Tengku and the rest could just be written off. If the Malays are falling short of their national economic equity, it is the Malays to blame themselves, not any other races who have literally laboured to etch their living, though with numerous obstacles. Enough is enough! We have had sufficient racial slurs from these so called elites, that it is just revolting. Would the Tun kindly explain how he managed to steer his offsprings up the ladder of prominence, though there is nothing much of an essence in them.
Can we not use venom on Tun and words such as 'Mamak', and other racial generalizations? It doesn't help to counter Tun M's racial prejudices with racial prejudice itself.
To get back on track, Tun M is actually wrong. Its not the Chinese that control the country. Its the rich politically-connected (read: BN MCA) Chinese tycoons that control the country together with the rich politically-connected Malays and Indians.
Out of the whole distribution of wealth thing, you can see it is disproportionally spread out... with those few BN oligarch's controlling a vast percentage, while the middle class and lower class scraping by.
Tun should know... after all, he dished out contracts to many of his cronies.

Just in case you do not know the true reason why your father left Kerala. Let me tell you the real reason why he came to Malaya.
To get rid of the stigma of being a pariah then, if he was a Prince you would have become a Prince, therefore that is why you are still a pariah. Too bad and too dad.
If he did not come to Malaya and as a Muslim he would have either gone to Pakistan or Bangladesh when East and West Pakistan were created when India became independent in 1947.

I am sick and tired of racism in Malaysia. Being born and bred in K.L., I was NOT given the opportunity to further my studies after STPM. I worked as a kuli for years and saved every cent to futher my studies.
When I returned, there was no job openings for me. I underwent great hardships. In the end, I am forced to be an entrepreneur.
The remarks made by Tan Sri Mahatir stirs up greater hatred and hostility among all the races. I notice this from all bumis when they see me.
My kids in school informed me about racism. They said that bumis cannot talk to them because of their colour... Racism must end. When can Malaysia ever be united??
