The Syariah court judge Abdul Rahman Mohd Yunos who sentenced Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno to be caned for drinking beer has served up a similar punishment on an Indonesian man for consuming alcohol, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The Malaysian Insider reported that Nazarudin Kamaruddin, 46, had become the first person to be caned for consuming alcohol in Pahang state in central Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Mirzan Mahathir has defended his investment group’s stake in Philippines conglomerate San Miguel Corp (SMC), saying the company was well on the way to diversifying substantially from its brewery business.
In a letter to The Malaysian Insider yesterday, Mirzan said San Miguel Corp had decided to shift its attention to the infrastructure, public utility and energy requirements of the Philippines, from its core brewery business.
Kartika and Nazarudin should learn a valuable lesson here. Do not drink beer if you are not rich and mighty. If you are, own a brewery instead.
Is the syariah court judge going to call up Mirzan to face a whipping sentence too? If yes, I bet it could be more than 10k lashes. What hypocrisy!

For once you are right, Muslim should not invest in such forbidden business. Lets see a quick diversification or he should just sell off. As usual you have no idea how to overcome problems - just good at passing remarks:(
Syariah law? sound rather archaic and holier than thou. If Muslims are not to invest in forbidden business 90% or more of the Muslims here will be unemployed. If you are in business you will know what I mean. Even the tax payer money the Govt spent on the people come mainly from those who are investing in so called forbidden businesses. The very ringgit you hold in your hands are also printed by people in a country deemed to be infidels. WHy use it? Please wake up from the dark ages.- Another Anonymous
No need for a brewery lah. Just buy over some shares from a Chinese / Indian friend who owns a coffee shop which sells bottled beer. When youwant to drink, just send the bottles upstairs to the office. Or after closing hour, just shut the door, and have a swig. Or if you are into more seriious stuff, just buy some shares into some bistro or pub. Then you can have the whisky, wine, etc.
