Danger Looming in Pakatan Penang

There is always a danger sitting too comfortably on a two-third majority. Wise leaders would have immediately taken it as a sign of high expectations and not high popularity.

Any leadership comes with a huge responsibility, and its reward too for a job well done at the end of term. However, the Pakatan Penang state government in Penang has started to show signs of burn-out and lack of ideas.

It is important for the state government to conduct its own performance audit ahead of the mid-term review of its governance in Penang. The state government should take a close serious look at these areas:

1) Socio-economic development: The Next Step

Pakatan rule is hitting the middle mark soon but we have yet to see a comprehensive strategic plan for Penang's socio-economic development. The state government had established a few committees and appointed a group of advisers but these committees/individuals have yet to achieve anything substantial. Two key areas have been earmarked as engines of growth for Penang, hightech R&D and tourism, but little is known how these areas can be further developed.

There is a limit to trade and tourism visits and participation in various overseas expos. Tourists and investors are attracted to what really the state has to offer. Where is the state heritage tourism development plan? What is the role and purpose of having two tourism offices in the state; e.g. Penang Global Tourism Sdn. Bhd. and State Tourism Exco which have created more confusion and grey areas than synergy?

Recently, the Penang CM Lim Guan Eng has earmarked another science park on the island, claiming that the present one at Seberang Perai is nothing but 'a jungle'. Is it wise to concentrate all developments on the island?

Based on critical mass and land cost, Seberang Perai offers better value for money to investors. The state government needs to catalyst the building of amenities, infrastructure and residential townships to support the industrialisation of Seberang Perai. Not neglecting it.

The newly proposed convention centre is yet another poorly thought out plan by the state government. A Pakatan assemblyman told me that there was no consultation with the assemblymen and relevant parties to gather input on the convention centre. I was told that it is a short term measure since there is already a convention centre being built at The Light, an IJM project. Perhaps to add on to the short list of achievement by the present state government. There are many more low hanging fruits e.g. cleanliness, public transport, public amenities, tourism infrastructure etc.

Blogger Anil Netto has alerted us to a Penang Island draft Local Plan, which was prepared by a consultant in KL, is now being revised by the state government to put in higher density in certain areas, in the name of providing a bigger catchment area for public transport corridors.

Higher density in certain areas in Penang, especially on the island, is a already a problem for the state. I am looking forward to read the full report. You should too.

2) Election promises

Prior to the 2008 general election, the Pakatan coalition (more of an electoral pact then), had made several promises to the voters. In the heat of its campaign, the individual parties had pledged to help reverse and correct some of Barisan excesses. In come the Kampung Buah Pala, heritage zone development and hillside construction fiascoes. The present state government found itself helpless to help address these issues.

The promise of holding local council elections may not see the light anytime soon too.

3) Plants over public space

Recently, the state secretariat has decided to fence up the compound of Dewan Sri Pinang. State Exco Chow Kon Yeow clarified that the fence in front of Dewan Sri Pinang was necessary to protect trees and flowers planted within the compound.

Funny, why plant trees and flowers and then separate them from public access? Parks in foreign countries are open to public access and recreation. The point is the state government is still holding a conservative perception of Penangites. We should be ashamed of ourselves for being treated as possible vandalists by the state government. How can we progress as a civil society with this kind of perception?

In this case, why plant the trees and flowers if the state government fears that they might be vandalised or stolen? Public space should be given priority over plants and flowers.

4) Political stability

A lack of consultation or a growing discontent of the present leadership style is going to cause trouble brewing and invite the vultures to Penang soon. Instead of hoping for positive changes and a breath of fresh air after the tumultuous period of Barisan rule and the mediocrity of Koh Tsu Koon's stewardship, we are going into troubled spell again.

A top PKR leader is strongly rumoured to soon leave the party and become a Barisan Nasional-friendly independent parliamentarian.

The PKR MP from Penang is said to have already secured assurances from a few other Pakatan Rakyat parliamentarians to follow suit. It's learnt that he is actively wooing another two or three Pakatan parliamentarians.

I can figure out the identity of this MP. It is time for this man to return to where he came from. Leopard does not change its spots that easily.

Our politics is going to go back to a square one. Partly due to lack of calibre and partly due to the arrogance and temptation of power and fame.

It is not that hard to wonder why skilled and highly qualified Malaysians are leaving for greener pastures. As a saving grace, we should try to persuade them to enter politics instead and help liberate us from the half-bakes currently running the country.

It is a big challenge you know for PR in all the states.Limitations to exercise power because of Federal policies and the screw ball mindset of all the civil servants,Jiak Pa Tan See(Hokein says eat full and waiting to die).
It is to be expected that some MPs will desert! Why? They are disappointed that it is not as lucrative as before lah...

The best brains leaving and only those left are "so-so " only, Penang included.

Let all these PKR ultra racists & extremists leave, better for people to know who they really are and what they are after (contract$$$). PR needs to rid itself of these UMMNO, all in the guise as moderates in PKR and Islamists in PAS. THey are better off with the other trolls in UMNO, and we are better off without them!

If tourism is going to be a key instruments in their development of Penang, better qualified people must helm the sector. Full stop.

Their apparent intolerance to criticisms is going to be another point that they need to address, not so much with LGE, but to his other henchmen. LGE has got to act as a stateman and not an opposition leader.

The botanical gardens, PISA, the locking up of the field infront of Dewan Sri Pinang is going to be issues that is going to be manipulated to the hilt and it is going to be costly to this state Government. The greeneries are missing and Penangnites are angry with their demeaning excuse that trees planted will be damaged by vandals. If it is damaged, replant and replant. The concrete infront of the gated area is such an eyesore. Where were the wonderful greens?

If PISA is going to be temporary, save the 50 million and invest in another 100 million convention centre on the mainland.

If these people are willing to go to the ground, turun padang, you can hear the grumblings and dissatisfactions. Look like this is going to be a one time wonder Government.

To the PKR lawmakers, please leave now as there is no reason for you not to leave as PKR is leaderless. Takes a month to take a small decision on a recalcitrant MP. Probably will take a decade to solve a problem of the Rakyat. It is the best time for you to move and become BN friendly after good negotiations. Why not? The leadership is so disappointing and does not give much encouragements to their assemblymen. Just move on. Two years is a very long time in politics.

BN does not need to destabilize this Government, it will fall in the next GE.

To Anon 2:54

yea right...you should be happily welcoming Ahmad Said and UMNO goons back to govern Penang, forget bout Gerakan !!

now, everybody shout (especially anon 2:54)... hidup UMNO !!, hidup BN !!

Omar

To Omar,

Looks like you are another intolerant DAP goon, unable to accept criticisms. What is so good about DAP compared to BN so far?

Ahmad Said is good to wake up the non Malays, pendatang, it will certainly put the non Malays on the alert and work harder to achieve success. I think he is good for the non Malays.

Reminding us of Ahmad Said to cover the shortcomings of DAP Government is not going to work.

To the PKR reps, leave PKR, now, the timing is correct and you have every reason to be "disappointed" Make sure you negotiate well and good and just cross over. Make sure it is fair and good. How can you work with people like Omar? Just move on, and forget about this hopeless Government.

Anonymous,
I think the true scale to measure the performance of the current Penang Government is to compare the present state of affairs against the performance achieved by Gerakan in the years they had Penang. The Penangnites hated Koh Tsu Khoon and labelled him a lame duck, he was more of UMNO lap dog. Today LGE is called a dictator by PKR MP, is there ever going to be someone who can satisfy everyone ?
Penangnites must realise that LGE is doing his best under the circumstance, learn to appreciate and give credits when due. What a demanding lot!!!!
Vote the screwup Barisan back in power and see what you get, maybe Penangnites prefer lap dogs like Ah Khoon.
Disgusted

People like Zahrain, never expected that the PR will sweep Penang. Had he realized that he would defintitely contested a state seat. This guy is really ambitious, to serve is not his motto, and as an ex UMNO guy, he has that "ketuanan" mentality with him.

Expect him to side up with Zulifli, Wee Choo Keong and a few others to create untold misery in PKR and then they quit for BN after getting what they want. I will stand as an independent against him come the next GE to split the votes in his constituency! Politicians with low morals must be voted out, and Zahrain is one.

Well, Zahrain's action would only lead to the destruction of PKR Penang. If he continues with that direction.

It's more of the brinkmanship strategy. However calling LGE dictatorial would rather ensure that DAP would stay in power for at least 20 years.

Heck, that's how Ah Koon stayed in power for so long

It pained me to see LGE falling come the next GE, not due to his own faults moreso, that of his lieutenants, but, LGE must be responsible for choosing them. It was his choice.

It is really a wonder how Penang can make tourism its key fundamental to developments, when, the wrong person is at the helm. We need better quality here, tourists are not going to come here because they love to see the face of LGE. What have they done to bring in the tourists? Just what have they done? Nothing!

I agree absolutely that the Botanical Garden issue, is the divine intervention that will make Penang fall to BN. Really, have they make any effort to improve the situation? I think they are too big headed to bother about the peoples needs. If a hard core PR supporter like me can think this way, I must say many are already surrendering! We had in the interests of PR reminded them that the Botanical Garden issue is not to be overlooked, but, they just could not be bothered! Maybe, LGE as Zahrain pointed out is from Melaka, and therefore not in sync with Penangnites. The Botanical Gardens is in the hearts of generations of Penangnites and is very sentimental to them, but, does DAP bother? What good is it of them to be reporting turning budget deficits into surplus when they cannot look after the basic needs of the Rakyat? Can you eat and breathe ringgit notes?

Anyway, if they continue to be hard headed on the Botanical issue, Penangnites must send them to be the opposition as the are so used to! DAP with its current representatives is just too weak to govern. The quality is just missing in the State Government! Vote DAP out come the next GE if they are so adamant to look and take immediate steps to improve the situation at the Botanical Gardens! Just vote them out, let them save the ringgit notes for BN to squander.

LGE should thank PERKASA and UMNO Baru for boosting his waning popularity. The public are sympathetic and angry with UMNO Baru, not because LGE is better.

LGE's men holding important portfolios in the state government will cause his own downfall.

Oh! Yes, tourists will love to come to Penang because it is so clean and beautiful without any form of efforts to promote it. Even, if there are promotions, it is syiok sendiri only, remember, the tennis fiasco? Shameful and disgusting is it not?

This is the DAP led Government of LGE, the man who is so good in turning budget deficits into surplus. He NEGLECTS Penangnites favourite park, which we had prided for generations to save a few millions here and there! Enough is enough! Send the DAP out come the next GE!
