It is interesting to know who are the ones behind PM Najib's economic vision. Those who are advising him should know that policies are interconnected. A policy change must be balanced against other components in the equation. For example, subsidy cuts must be complimented with steps and efforts to increase the per capita income of the people.
Malaysia's per capita income of USD7k per annum in low compared to its aspiration to become a fully developed country by 2020. The government wants to double the per capita income by 2020 but fall short of spelling out the steps to be taken.
Ironically, the cabinet is supposed to meet up on Wednesday to approve cuts in various subsidies e.g. sugar, flour, oil, gas etc.
It may be wise to reduce the government's spending on subsidies but at the same time these savings must be channeled towards real capacity building to enhance the per capita income of Malaysians.
If we continue to remain a low salary and low cost destination, the cuts will bring more destitution to the people. Standard of living will continue to drop due to lower consumption power and higher goods and services costs.
Moreover, the government is trying to create more outlets for people to 'try their luck' when everything else looks gloomy. Azly said "In the name of progress and development, Malaysia hopes to create a nation of gamblers by approving soccer gambling licenses."
I totally support Azly's call to stop giving out more gambling licenses. More people who may not have access to illegal betting syndicates can now become legal punters.
It appears that Najib's economic policy and market liberalisation has confused more people than provide enlightenment.
He should help to address critical issues such as skills and brains deficit, low income level, corruption, wastage of public funds, civil service transformation and others.
The most important liberalisation he has failed to undertake is to provide a comprehensive review of the NEP and to introduce meritocracy into the system.
Liberalisation is not by giving more soccer gambling licenses. I agree with Azly that it is a new social cancer which is waiting to wreck many households.

It is most frustrating when we know that the Millions of Ringgit saved could be misused by corrupted officials. Than money saved by the government will be down the drain. The rich will become richer and the poor will be poorer. I will support the subsidies cut if the money saved could be use to buid more universities so that we do not have to send our children to private universities. Or it could be use to improve public transport etc, etc, etc.
Brother!!!
This man the PM of Malaysia is a confused person but his greed to hold on to power will make him more confused.
So sorry for this country if the rakyat is still sleeping.
Commonsense will tell you it will be fatal to stop subsidies, introduce service taxes without wage increases! Sure road to social unrest.
Don forget to mentioned Malaysia's car prices, local or imported are one of the most expensive in the whole planet Earth!!!Basically our fuel are not subsidised,we already pay for the fuel "subsidy" in advance when we buy car.
MALAYSIANS ARE SUFFERING THE OPPRESSIVE RULE BY THE ROUGES OF UMNO BN AND WE ARE HOPEFUL THAT THERE ARE MORE RPKS WHO DARE TO EXPOSE & BRING OUT ALL THE WRONG DOINGS OF THE CORRUPTED LEADERS OF UMNO BN TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE WHOLE WORLD SO THAT ALL MALAYSIAN VOTERS WILL VOTE WISELY COME GE 13 AND BRING DOWN THE CORRUPTED AND OPPRESSIVE UMNO BN GOVERNMENT SOONEST POSSIBLE FOR THE FUTURE WELL BEING OF ALL MALAYSIAN CITIZENS AS THE COUNTRY’S RESOURCES WILL SOON BE DECIMATED IN NO TIME UNDER THE WASTEFUL AND CORRUPTED UMNO OFFICIALS MIS-MANAGING THE MALAYSIAN ECONOMY.
The war that was necessary to be fought by all Malaysians is the only war against corruption by UMNO Rouges and their oppressive rule by their using Police Force as their tools to suppress dissents ok?
This is necessary so the said Govt. Coffers will not be empty when the new PR Govt. took over from them come next GE, Malaysian Voters should know what is required to throw them all out then because future generations of Malaysians will suffer great poverty after Umno BN would have bankrupted the Govt. Coffers by then if there is no CHANGE OF HANDS AFTER DECADES OF MIS-MANAGEMENT OF THE ECONOMY AND HIDING THE DAMAGED DONE BY POSTING RECOVERY STORIES AND THE OVER-GLORIFIED NEM IN THE MSM FOR SHOW ONLY, HOW TO BELIEVE THE MSM WHEN WHAT THEY TRULY DID WAS TO TELL ALL SORTS OF LIES OR DISTORTIONS FOR THE UMNO BN GOVERNMENT IN POWER WHO CONTROLLED THEIR YEARLY RENEWAL PUBLISHING LICENCES.
ANOTHER OF THE GREAT LIES AND DISTORTIONS THE CORRUPTED UMNO BN WILL TRY TO SPREAD A PROPAGANDA AND IN ORDER TO BRAINWASH AND HOODWINK THE MALAYSIAN GENERAL PUBLIC INTO BELIEVING THERE ARE REAL FUEL SUBSIDIES IN OIL (PETROL & DIESEL) AND GAS, THERE CAN NEVER BE ANY SUBSIDIES IN THESE ITEMS BECAUSE MALAYSIA IS A NETT OIL AND GAS PRODUCER MEANING AFTER THE DEDUCTION OF DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION MALAYSIA HAS PRODUCED AN EXCESS OF THESE ITEMS FOR EXPORT AND WHATEVER IS FOR DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION IS SOLD AT A DISCOUNT AND NEVER CONSIDERED AS SUBSIDY AT ALL QUOTING AN EXAMPLE LIKE OIL AND GAS PRODUCER LIKE BRUNEI AND SAUDI ARABIA AND OTHER GREAT OIL PRODUCERS, DOMESTIC PETROL AND DIESEL PRICES ARE SOLD LOCALLY AT A VERY STEEP DISCOUNTED PRICES AS COMPARED AGAINST WORLD IMPORTERS NON-OIL PRODUCERS’ LOCAL CONSUMPTION PRICES AND THE UMNO BN ROUGES ARE TRYING TO TAKE ALL MALAYSIANS FOR A RIDE BY INSISTING THAT THERE IS A SUBSIDY IN THE OIL AND GAS PRICES BUT IN FACT THERE WERE NONE BUT A STRATEGY TO CHEAT FOR THEIR OWN END TO PRACTISE MORE CORRUPTIONS FROM THE EXTRA THAT COULD BE MADE FROM THOSE LIES AND DISTORTIONS THEY TRY TO SPREAD IN THE MSMES CONTROLLED TIGHTLY BY THEM WITH THE RESTRICTIVE YEARLY RENEWAL PUBLISHING LICENCES.
I think to transform Malaysia today to higher economic levels calls for bold and drastic measures.Meritocracy is one thing but what is the will of the government to do it? Productivity calls for change in attitude and education, but look what our educational policies have nurtured the kind of workforce we have today. We are lucky to have so much natural resources but so much have been wasted and scoundreled. If not we will be of higher economic status country that today. I hope the present PM will be farsighted to realise these and take drastical and practical steps to transform.
Ghee whiz, I thought the only economics theory that Najib understood was down to "I help you, You help me" ??!!??
You can have the best solution for economic but what's the point if all the savings go to the corrupt ?
Dont talk about any vision when mahatikus continue to hubbub on cruthes which has turned into addiction and on top of that he cant evern distinguish what is corruption or not till todate.
All you have to do now is to take care of your self- economic makes easy.
In the past 50++ years, the same manegement team of BN to run the Malaysia business with various visions & programmes.....results are clear: total failure for the entire nation yet the richest rich are the management team (how to explain this? ie: khir toyo, zakaria, dr m, khairy adt etc). If the same team is allowed to run the Malaysia business for another 50 year, i am sure nothing could improve at all...it is like keep doing the same trick again and again and hope to see miracle to happen is insanity ....
I really dont understand why as a country which export oil and also major exporter of palm oil, can become bankrupt? The answer is nothing else but incapable administration! Malaysia wont have a future if still govern by the current administration. Wake up rakyat Malaysia! So sad.
Most people are very confused with the NEM. During the height of Sibu by-election the supporters of BN candidate seemed to promote NEM to win support of non Bumiputra voters. After the by-election the PM told the audience of Bumiputra Economic Congress that NEM is not finalized. Actually which is which? Regarding the issue of legalising sports betting the vast majority of the public, be they Bumiputra or non Bumiputra, are firmly against it. Let's see how BN and PKR argue about the pro and con.
Cancerous Disease
Kill the cancerous disease and the patient will survive, likewise get rid of the root cause and the Nation will survive and thrive.
It does not matter what they do because whatever they do will be to no avail. Like RPK said in London, it is no good attempting to treat the symptoms because it just simply will not work. It is the cancerous disease that should be treated. So therefore as long as UMNO is in the driver seat then absolutely nothing could be done. Before anything else, UMNO will first have to line their pockets, then their families pockets, then their cronies pockets and then whatever morsels left to the selected segment of the rakyat. So how much is enough? It does not matter how much natural resources Malaysia possess for come one day these resources will eventually be exhausted. Then what?
Be like Singapore one might suggest. But do our leaders have that mentality and maturity to do so? With the present government – not by an extra mile mate!
Now the UMNO BN Rogues will bankrupt the Nation’s Coffer and cut subsidies to rob the poor and to subsidize their rich crony Tycoons so that the benefits can go back to them on demand. All the poor rakyats were having a bad deal since 53 years ago with them in power not once did they not squeeze the Rakyats with taxes after taxes now they will try to impose GST 4% on all levels that will resulted in more 16% taxes imposed on all ordinary basics consumers’ goods from materials Suppliers, manufacturers, wholesalers to retailers. Now they are trying to cut subsidies but they are not cutting back taxes but instead increased the taxes.
Also it was discovered that they have their cronies increased the prices of foods such as vegetables and fruits included, also they have allowed their cronies to increase the prices of all basic construction materials including cement and steel to further squeeze the Rakyats’ well being of a reasonable survival in these bad times.
So what can we the rakyat do? Well we can change all these just by a stroke of the pen. Quoting RPK, ‘We the rakyat is the boss’. So come GE13 with the stroke of the pen, we could effectively change the government and consign UMNO/BN to the gutter. Well not totally to the gutter but enough to effect them to be the opposition as at the end of the day checks and balances are still needed irregardless of who is forming the government on that day.
