Support Transparency International Malaysia's Call for Severing Nexus Between Politics and Business

Malaysians have far too long tolerated money politics, lamented TI-M. Worse, some of us are actually condoning and encouraging money politics by allowing our votes to be bought by corrupt politicians in order for them to hold to the power rein.

Hence, politicians are not to be wholly blamed for putting this country in such as pathetic state. The people must accept partial responsibility for allowing the state of politics to rot and deteriorate.

The lost of public confidence in public institutions, poor governance, corruption, unreasonable leadership, and abuse of power were driven and motivated by material wealth.

Transparency International - Malaysia (TI-M), in saying that it is high time that legislation is drafted to prevent politics from being mixed with business.

In its book 'Reforming Political Financing in Malaysia' launched on Sunday, the corruption watchdog recommended the enactment of a Political Parties Act to provide full disclosure of the sources of funds to political parties and to regulate such sources.

Under the Act, political parties would not be allowed to own businesses, as this is deemed to open the floodgates to nepotism, patronage, conflict of interest and abuse of power.

This would overcome problems with the Societies Act and Elections Offences Act, which are riddled with loopholes that can and have been exploited by political parties, it said.

Since TI-M has made the proposal, other NGOs, NGIs and general public should support the move and pressure all political parties to sign a pledge to adopt more transparency by providing public disclosures of their businesses.

It is unacceptable for political parties to control any media organizations. Hence, it is timely for both MCA and UMNO to divest their interests in two of the biggest media organizations in the country.

Media must be allowed to operate impartially and free from the interference of political masters.

MCA President Chua has offered steps to win back voters' confidence. Perhaps, he should take the first plunge by cutting the nexus between MCA and Star Publications (M) Berhad. I am sure it will do us good and help to restore our confidence in MCA's own political reformation.

Why look at UMNO if there are many things which can be undertaken by MCA itself?
Pakatan should be mindful of their lawmakers getting too cozy with developers and businessmen too.

Malaysia will go bankrupt by 2019. What a headline. This shocking declaration goes against the grain of past announcements of economic health and growth. What did we fail to see it before? What happened to our plan to become a developed nation in 2020 as claimed by our now half dead mamak PM?
