Removal of Jamal a.k.a. Jiama of 988FM is Another Black Eye for Press Freedom in Malaysia

The removal of Jamaluddin Ibrahim - a host of the Chinese radio station 988's popular Hello Malaysia programme - for allegedly offending the authorities with his remarks on sensitive racial issues is another black eye for press freedom in Malaysia.

PM Najib's administration is again showing its insecurity and intolerance over dissent and discussion over political, social and governance issues. Unfortunately, the MCMC and the Home Ministry had practiced double standards when parties such as Perkasa and Utusan Melayu had manufactured more racial hatred, lies and hostility.

Jamaluddin told Malaysiakini that the management told him that he had been taken off the air indefinitely from today.

According to him the management received a letter from MCMC yesterday.

The letter named him, saying that the programme is suspected of "threatening national security" and "compromising race relationships".

I had known Jamal for a couple of months and might even use him for a movie my company is jointly producing with a Beijing production house and the famed Beijing Film Academy. Jamal had consistently stayed away from any political related events and tried to stay neutral. He has persistently promoted multiracialism and a truly multiracial political model.

Although a Malay by ethnicity, Jamal is truly reflective of 1Malaysia. He studied in Beijing and took the interest to learn about another culture. His educational background did not make him less Malay unlike a particular Chinese Muslim academician who had forgotten his racial roots.

I had a pleasure to join him twice on his radio programme despite my lack of Mandarin proficiency. He assured me that language is only a medium of communication and took the pain to translate and explain to the listeners my comments.

If his programme is deemed a threat to national security, those cow head protesters, Ibrahim Ali, Ahmad Ismail and other Perkasa members should be locked up in high security prison for life.

I would like to urge all of you to PROTEST the action taken against Jamal. I heard both Qiu Yue and Joe Liaw will be taken off over the next few days too.

This country has stooped too low. Only those as idiotic and ridiculous as the MACC prosecutor Abdul Razak Musa will climb up the leadership ladder.

In this case, 988FM did not have a choice but to remove Jamal and the rest from the morning programme. The radio station was threatened with a removal of their operating license if they refused to take any action against the hosts.

This is a black day for Malaysia press freedom. Ironically, I had just commented on our depressing press freedom index at an international online journalism forum this morning.

Any democratically elected government must be open to criticism. This government, surprisingly, has taken a dangerous path of intolerance and repression.

So shameful!

Fully agreed. Jamal is a real Malaysian. The only bright side of Jamal's removal is BN will lose more support from the public,

Those responsible for the removal thinking that this is the end. I can tell you,the truth will prevail over tyranny. Those mastermind behind this are so corrupted, narrow minded and racist attitudes, you cannot control how people think and freedom of speech. We will show you in the coming election as we know very well what is happening....

I truly enjoy jamal's every morning comment on the topics of the day. He is not what the MCMC claimed he is, he is purely looking at the issue at different angle with open mind. Removal of Jamal is a big lost to the 988 listeners.

Yes, please make use of the talent of Jiama in your joint film production in China. Such talent and quality should not be wasted and taken off like that.

Very sad day for our nation, as the nation is gradually being sucked into this gloomy tunnel of speak not-hear not- see not.

I listen to them very morning! I don’t how they could threaten national security & compromise race relationship? They, especially build Malaysian, he need not slogan of 1 Malaysia, he resemble 1 malaysian, a malay ethic, speak mandarin and Malaysian though. If he is not allowed to spearhead the spirit as malaysian, who fit?

No only he should continue with 988 ‘morning talk m’sia’, we need to get more people who resemble 1 malaysian to all radio station to ‘talk ms’ia’ every morning!

Jamal is 1 M'sia slogan, he is the national flag! If you axed him, shut-up on 1 malaysia and you just burned that national flag of us! Stupid government, change it!

Absolutely agreed, Jamal is a true true true Malaysian, even some of the audience who called up to voice up their disagreement towards some other race, Jamal brought out the multiracial sentiment. Bravo, it's such a beautiful morning, informative programme.........Malaysia and Vision 2020? Come on, the government must be thinking the people are all idiot to believe all these nonsense? We don't even have freedom to just talk.....I bet if the BN still continues here....We'll go bankrupt very very soon....with all the wealth that we posses swallowed by all these great leaders who are so dramatic every single day.......and all MYR sink into Suisse Banks!

Dear Mr Khoo KP, good day to you. I am very sad about this incident. As a Malaysian Chinese, I am concert about my country and the future of my self and my family. I am so sad to said that we live in a country where we are feed and listence to "authority wish" only.
Every morning when I drive to work, from 6.45am (fetch my child to school) until I reach my destination at 8.30am (From Kajang to KL). I listen to radio program. But, I am very very sad to said that many of the chinese radio program are just a few monkey making fun of you and the listener. Like FM88, make fun of others by making a fake phone call. FM 101, only talk on entertainment issue. FM 106, is just a gourverment mouth.
I am so sick of listening to all this day after day. I even switch it off and listen to CD.
Until recently I am so happy to get into this FM988 morning talk program.
The program let me felt so good. We are Malaysian, we love our country, that why we concern on the issue and want to know more about our country politic, current issue and etc..
The view points and comments from the 6 DJ were their own voice. I did not agreed with all their comments, but that is ok. We are mature and should know that we need to respect others and their thought. We are not stupid. We will not be influence easyly.
It is good to have this program and it let us know some current issue in depth. The truth will come out. People will listen to the truth. It does not mean we will hate and cause problems when we know the truth.
We know that we live in a multi racial country. The world is becoming smaller (by distance) and one day we will become citizen of the world.
We need to progress and know how to handle differences. It is not an easy task.
Giving a chance to speak out our different is a start. Giving a chance to our people to respect, to kown, to deal, to compromise and to live in a harmony socity is importance.
By closing down radio program can create negative impact. They even close down these DJ facebook (on 20 Aug 2010). This is silly. It is like a primary school teacher punising his student who did not obey the teacher wish. The student did not have a change to defend him self or do things in a different way. The student is not bad, he just want to show to others how he love the country.

I love my country. I want to listent to good quality radio station. Now, I am so sad.
This morning when I switch on to radio, I keep changing station because what I get are those program who making fun of others.

Is this our future? The radio giving out silly idea and making fun of people? Is this what we want our children to listent to?

Where is the future of my child? Why we said our young generation, our chinese are not loving the country, not paying attention to politic, not willing to join social work......

I hope in this life of mine, I can see and listent to simillar program on air again.

Wish all Malaysian a happy day.

Not surprising at all, given that the BN is now like a wounded dog cornered. It's just baring it's teeth and try to bite back irrespective if it is a friend or foe it's facing. Umno is now so desperate that they are gasping at straw or anything or anyone. And looks like they are still trapped in the racial and religious mentality. But on the bright side, this latest incidence will only hasten their demise.

Another example of how MCA bastardize freedom of speech utilizing MCMC as a shield.

1st case - closure of Wa FM
2nd case - termination of editor of RTM and NTV7 current affairs program
3rd case - Sacking of Hsu Guo Wei,one of pioneer of this 988 talk show.
Latest - Suspending Jamal, COO and Program Director of 988.

Wtf is MCA doing? They think the general public are idiots ? Lets make them irrelevant in Malaysia's political arena in the coming GE.

MCA is headed by someone committed criminal act punishable by law yet they are meted out sentence on some speaks with the spirit of speech freedom.

Any true blue Malaysians, who genuinely has the interest of the country at heart, must have lost whatever hope they may harbour, that this regime will ever bring the country forward. Every sign indicated that it will only move in one direction, i.e backward; should it be allowed to rule over this country. myfish

Commentators of above please do not feel sad. If these people with omnipotent power in the government holding apex office do not intend to reinvent themselves, we reform ourselves by making the decision change them away definitely by using ballot box in GE13th.
Why wasting time telling them not to bring malfeasance to Malaysia ? Since they are nerdy and imbecile, making life more difficult for Malaysian, we can use our voting powers to boot them out. It is the only more efficient way significantly to give them the boot.

Only races other than M are commenting. Does anyone knows what are the Ms thinking?

Share with everyone of u a true life experience. I joined a national day choir competition few years back with my uni's choir, n the competition was held in a gov uni, n I was from a private institute. All the speeches were in M, n apparently my M language was not as good as when I was in high school. So I felt helpless listening to all te speeches n instructions. So I blogged about it when I'm back. N the next week I was being called into the uni's office n started being 'interviewes'. Even some gov officers joined in to question me as well. I was asked to remove the blog thread n was forbiddened to represent the school for any competitions.

So what are these? Press freedom? I wasn't even being racist but just an expression of what I feel, n this is what I get? I definitely know wht to do on the next GE. Bn has to go down anyhow.

Guys,

This is what I heard:

1) MCMC has been monitoring the morning programme since Chua took over MCA.
2) On giving Rosmah a nickname in Mandarin was not accurate. Apparently Najib gave Rosmah a birthday cake which has a kitten picture as deco. Qiu Yue & Jiama asked audience to call in to name the kitten. One listener called in and suggested Rose. Kitte in Mandarin = Mau...RoseMau sounded like Rosmah. So a particular Chinese pegawai translated the programme and made a complaint to MCMC that the programme was discussing sensitive issues on race (one segment asked about race discrimination in Malaysia - does it exists?) and it made fun of Rosmah, the PM's wife.
3) Lim Guan Eng's interview on 988 on the Komtar fiasco when a coffee shop owner tried to douse himself.
4) Teng Chang Khim's interview on 988 when the Selangor fiasco on council letter head was exposed.

Next Joe Liaw and Qiu Yue's tearly pleas on 988 fr support for Jiama was the last straw to the authority. - which led to the suspension of Wong Lai Ngo and Chen Chia Rong

Dear Khoo KP,
Good day to you.

Refer to your comment on what you heard.

For the program on giving nickname to PM kitte, I felt that this is just a "entertainment" show which those DJ try to "please" our PM. But it turn out to be not wllcome. So bad to our DJ. This incident make us felt that we are living in a country rule by "emperor". So, if you said wrong word to "emperor", then you will get into trouble.

About the interview or appearance of Lim GE and Teng CK in the program, it was a suprise to me too. Of cause people will think that this program "support" them.
But, from what I felt was different.
The DJ start the program by making bad comment on the 2 issue which make me felt that Lim GE and Teng CK adminstration had did a wrong job. To my suprise, them responded to the program and personnaly answer the question on air, to all Malaysian openly.

Yes, I still felt that they had make a mistake on those issue. What they said or explain to the public on air did not make me felt that they are correct. But, I like the way they tell us what had happen and promised to do the corrective action. That make me felt that they are good leader and responsible for their action.
This is what make the different.

From so many issue that were brought into air by the DJ, I did not heard any respond from our MCA, Gerakan, UMNO etc leader that call in or respond to the call from the DJ. Why? They can use this opportunities to tell the puplic what had happen. They can win my respect if what they said is the truth.
I know that those issue out there are not easy to solve. To complain is easy then to do it.
But, we need a leader who has the heart to help us and tell the truth. Not to make fun of us and "sell" us.

Bring back this morning program to us.

Kajang Cinese Boy.

Honestly, I feel that Jamal's program is giving the non-Malays a different angel on how non-Malays especially Chinese look at the Malays. At least, thru this program a lot of Chinese listeners realise that not all Malays like the way the current government run the country and there are Malays who support meritocracy and beg for fairness among different races.

See how the way P3rka$a, ArmNO and Utu$an provoke racist sentiment, hatred and panic among the Malays towards non-Malays. This in return create a tense and giving wrong message to Chinese that Malays support these group.

So I still believe Jamal's program give Chinese a fresh new look of Malays from the eyes of Chinese and most importantly ease the tense and doubtful among these 2 races.

Unfortunately this is not wat MCMC sees. I definitely have no hope in the current government - sad to say that.
