According to a TMI report, Malaysia’ capital city has dropped eight spots to 48 in a ranking of the world’s most global cities by international management consulting firm AT Kearney, suggesting the Najib administration has to try harder to make Kuala Lumpur a world class city.
In terms of liveability, KL ranks just 79th out of 130 cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2010 ranking of easiest places to live and was stagnant at 75th in the Mercer study of best places to live from 2006-2009.
The city also failed to make the list of the top 100 most innovative cities with strong cultural and human infrastructure and global links as assessed by Australian innovation consultancy firm 2thinknow.
The city’s attractiveness however is hampered by an absence of world class universities, relatively low salaries, lack of major cultural and outdoor attractions, lack of orderliness and poor maintenance, low levels of sophistication, creeping urban sprawl, crime, unhygienic conditions and traffic congestion.
AT Kearney noted that global cities are the urban elite and are shaping the future with new deals and ideas.
“Global cities are where you go to do business, yes, but also to see the greatest art, hear the greatest orchestras, learn the latest styles, eat the best food and study in the finest universities,” said the report.
“They have global corporations. But they also have think tanks, jazz bars and broadband. In a word, they have clout.”

What do we have in Kuala Lumpur? Traffic congestion, poor infrastructure, poor public transport system, rubbish, high crime, and a total lack of government's commitment on urban renewal.
Reality hurts but it is true that KL does not have much to offer. Simply because there is a lack of commitment, will and effort to promote art, performing art, creativity and innovation. We are a nation which is still at odds with affirmative action, race, religion and wasteful politicking.
KL is a boring place. Cut the crap about Perkasa, Malay supremacy, ethnic rights etc. It is time to start doing something serious. Otherwise, when this boat sinks we all go down as well.
Najib's policy makers and strategists should take a hard look at the report and think of what they should do to make KL a truly world class city. Stop hallucinating and convince us that ETP, NEM and 1Malaysia are achievable and not hot air.

KL is being treated as the tin mine kitty. $$ boleh. JKR can build a flyover foc for PWTC in Jalan Maxwell beside Maxwell School but not the flyover to Jinjang where the tolls are overpaid by 2 years. Opposite the Police Stations, buildings are set back the 4 star hotel is so close to the road that a drop down coach can traffic congestion.
"Stop hallucinating and convince us that ETP, NEM and 1Malaysia are achievable and not hot air"?
I don't think I am alone when I say that I have precious little confidence that Najib and his Cabinet are able to deliver anything more than a lot of empty HOT air.
Najib say proclaim some glorious sounding thing, and before the echoes have died away, his deputy or some other minister says the opposite.
Nice sounding NEM was castrated even before it was really born.
"1Malaysia" and the millions spent on its gestation, launch and promotion? One wave of the keris by Dr M endorsed Perkasa and all its wiras, and bye-bye to the money down the drain. And Ibrahim Ali proudly swaggers off, his chest puffed out so importantly.
Kapitan Najib say "This way!", but so many others push in other directions for supposedly noble reasons. And the kapitan does not seem able to whip his team into a cohesive entity.
Worse, instead of the trouble-makers and wrong-doers being disciplined and punished, those who oppose them have baseless accusations made against them and police reports lodged against them. Some messenger are hauled up while the culprits stay apparently immune.
After so long, what has been done about the two principals who made the racist statements?
I don't know why APCO's mega-bucks contract was renewed. Nor has there been much real good that has come from Najib's policy makers and strategists. All gaya but tadak substance lah. Huge amounts spent on consultancy fees, studies and promotion, but what results are there to show for it all?
UMNO is apparently beset with internal power plays. The other BN component parties are no better.
(Then again, the Pakatan side is not exactly hunky-dory either, with PKR and DAP fire-fighting and trying to quell ugly wars.)
So, when it comes to "little" matters like making KL a world class city, I would certainly not think poorly of anyone who bursts out laughing and sniggering, "Hah! KL world class city? It that even on their agenda?"
If I am not wrong Penang has become more 'livelier' than KL ! Yes KL has become very much boring.
Khoo,
Very soon you will hear from DPM or some cabinet ministers say that all these reports are biased and not representative. So? 'Tai ka lum ji say lor!' in cantonese (cling together and die together.
You are wrong KKP! We still have the twin towers, the brainchild of the great MAHATHIR! Hehehe
All these were the consequences of shenanigan Mahathir's corruption !
The shenanigan was only interested in developing big projects just so to get his big 'commission' he was not interested to ensure the quality and the need of the them. Hence Malaysia, with all that is available to him as P.M., did not move the nation forward but remains in the third world.
When Singapore with nothing and even has to purchase water from Malaysia has not only developed the nation into a first world country and most of all envied by many countriesthorough out the world but also has become top ten or number one in the world in many fields. While despite the shenanigan's attempts to retard their growth, he even banned to sell them the sands for their further development. That would make him really looked inferior to Lee Kuan Yew and his team of ministers. Other examples are the setting up of a port near Johore and the white elephant airport in Sepang were just trying to retard Singapore growth. But it were all turned out to be white elephants All these white elephants were implemented by the shenanigan without considering the needs for them and especially their quality. It was especially so were the construction of the Twin Tower just to ensure he has an office and a well paid job to go to when he retires to appear that the well paid job is keeping him going and not his ill gotten gains.
His last fling while as the P.M. was the building of the bridge linking Singapore and when it was cancelled by AAB when AAb was the P.M. it upset him so much that he came out blasting AAB and also the start of his demand that AAB to retire. Needless to say when Najib also did not build the bridge he wanted and also to give his son the post of a minister. And now he is trying to have him replaced. He should have remained as P.M. as the subsequent P.M.s must do what they think are best for the country and not to please him.
To realise all these he will have to wait a long long time as they will never happen in his life time. Too bad and so sad for the shenanigan. As a consequent he is now seen openly supporting Perkasa when he is still a member of Umno what kind of an Umno member he is and also what kind of Umno it is ?
Or is Perkasa an invisible part of Umno ?
Farish Noor described Malaysian politics thus: "Malaysian politics today is boring, tedious, juvenile (bordering on infantile at times) and downright crass and vulgar."
I will expand this a bit further - Malaysian leaders, judiciary, police, MACC, Election Commission, Civil Service, Media and its capital city KL are boring, tedious, juvenile (bordering on infantile at times) and downright crass and vulgar and dirty, racist, inhuman, sinful, uncivilized and crime infested."
hello, all these rankings are the work of saboteurs who want to undermine Perkasa. Afterall, rankings meant nothing here. we must also take the words of our beloved UMNO minister that freefall in national universities ranking also means nothing coz in Maalysia we have different methodologies in measuring progress. Hail UMNO.
Yes many of us agreed that all these world rankings of city, cleanliness, universities are new weapons from the evil west powers to suppress our strong good country. It's time for our country to close doors to the outside world so that we wont have to deal with all such nonsense. If old China,KhmerRouge Cambodia,Laos,Burma and N Korea can close door, why cant we do it?
Sick to know that the present bunch of politicians in UMNO/BN esp the top gun Pe.........M till todate keep talking and talking and talking, beating their chests but no actions. BN/UMNO can have all the greatest plans in the world, But if you still run the whole country along racial, religious and non meritocracy lines, the country will go down. Its only a matter of time. Forget about ETP, NEM, 1Malaysia etc....if you have half past six, racialistic schools headmastewrs/mistress and dumb dumb, lazy, no brain Perkasa bums shouting, beating their chests behaving like dickheads to the whole world.
My biggest lament about living in Malaysia is the dire lack of clean parks and outdoors.
I live in ss18 subang jaya. What do i get when i go for a walk? garbage, garbage and more garbage thrown indiscrimately. The kerb opposite the shops in ss14/1 has become a stinking garbage dump.
What else?Dog owners taking their beloved pooches for a "walk" and leaving the poo in public areas. So, where do you walk? not on the grass for sure.It makes me depressed! Defeats the purpose of going for a walk.
Hannah Yeoh lives in ss18. Is she blind to all this? I had thought a lady councillor would be more concerned about the quality of life. I was very sadly mistaken.
So, yeah, Malaysia is a huge garbage dump. Forget about operas, etc. Civilise Malaysians first.
Mr. Khoo,
Kita dah tahu statistiks ini sudah lama. You are spot on, KL is plain boring. I have worked in the KL City Ctr almost 25 years. Everyday I wish I dont have to work there. The morning & evening traffic jam just bring down my mood.
