When the idea to establish a movement, third force for national reform, to monitor the performance, integrity and credibility of politicians and political parties was proposed, I have received a number of responses from Straight Talk and Malaysia Today's readers.
Some supported the idea and others believe that we are not yet ready for a third force. Those who are against the idea opined that we need a to experience at least a change of federal government before a third force should materialize.
They argue that Pakatan state governments were given only 2.5 years to govern and they should be given a longer period to prove themselves. Granted, we agree that 2.5 years is not a very long time.
However, it is a reality that political parties cannot 'learn' the rope of governance, policy making and administration only after they have won the right to govern. Political parties in the newly minted Pakatan coalition are not new players in Malaysian politics. PAS was established in 23 August 1951, the DAP was established in 1965 and PKR was created in 1999. They should be prepared to lead at least two decades ago.
If not, the Pakatan politicians would become perpetual oppositions rather than policy makers. Political parties must be prepared to rule even when they are in the opposition. This is the most important tenet of competitive and democratic party politics. Political parties compete for power to govern and NOT just to oppose.
The political process takes its effect every five years. Political parties are given a maximum of 5-year period to prove themselves at governance. Ruling parties need to seek a new mandate after a 5-year period.
How long does Pakatan need to justify its ability to govern? 20 years? Would it be democratic to give them a blank check to govern for the next 20 years without a proper check-and-balance?
This third force cannot act selectively. We must subject the two coalitions to the same level playing field. The barriers for both Pakatan and BN must be the same.
It is even more important for Pakatan to live up to our expectations. They are the most vulnerable between the two coalitions. More than 10 of their elected representatives had 'defected' to the other side and the defections had caused a collapsed of a democratically elected government, bastardizing the mandate given by the majority of voters.
If Pakatan is not being pressured to pull up their socks and offer us better candidates, how can we so sure that history will not repeat itself should the coalition wins a simple majority at the federal government?
Defections and an undemocratic change of government will destabilize the country and cause unnecessary economic hardship.
Malaysians must think hard. Spare the rod and spoil the child.
A third force represents thinking voters/stakeholders is very important to ensure that a change for the better becomes mandatory for all political parties who want to rule the country. They need our mandate and this mandate must not be given without rules, expectations and conditions.
We must set these conditions, expectations and rules now before their political arrogance and selfishness destroys the rest of us.
It is time to tell them to respect our constitutional rights, stop sectarian politics of race and religion and respect the rule of law.
Politicians are not above the law, not even Umno leaders.
We need to build a consensus for a New Malaysia now. The future of this country rests on a non-racial, non-discriminative, progressive, innovative, creative, democratic and dynamic path.
A third force or not, you decide.
I would like to urge you to support the right of overseas Malaysians to vote. Read here.
Since 60% of a million overseas Malaysians are working in the Southeast Asian region, I would like you to support a FLY BACK programme this blog and a third force movement are supporting.
FLY BACK has two components:
1) Make sure you are registered as a voter
2) Please make sure you can make a quick arrangement to come back to vote within 2 weeks when a general election is called.
600,000 voters can help to transform the political landscape of this country. You need to help us to help you!
Please rally all your friends (Malaysians) overseas to make this commitment in the 13th general election.
Any CHANGE must start from OURSELF/YOU!
Do not make the word 'change' just a jingle but an action.

You see, transformation or change of policy/system need time to see its effect. Since we have experienced the BN style of government and saw its fallacies after 50 years and people want a change,so what alternative other than PR.Since change need some time to see its effect,so I think a two- term rule should be accorded.Your third force will be acting as a watch-dog of the new government. Well,if they dont perform, then we change the government again.
Hi Mr. Khoo,
Can you please help list down what are the many reforms, many of which are urgently needed, for your readers so that when it comes to decision time, they can vote according to who or which party of coalition that they think best can help bring the reforms to fruitation.
Here is my probably incomplete list:
1. Judiciary – this is our last bastion for justice when ruling government can’t give us that.
2. Rule of Law and not Rule by Law
3. Education system – our education system presently producing lots unemployable graduates among more other woes
4. National unity with less incitements to racial and religious hatred
5. Truely free and fair elections
6. Truly independent and respectable national institutions including Judiciary, MACC, Election Commission, Police
7. civil service that serve the nation
8. human rights (including right to fair trail and not by a kangaroo court)
9. Prime Minister who don’t one day say zero tolerance for corruption then next day go “you help me I help you" kind of election bribery
9a. Truly independent AG
10. reduce corruption
11. Don’t even know if we can include getting back all those stolen monies from previous corrupt deals
Yes,agreed, these 2 parties DAP/PAS are too long comfortable being in the opposition (40 years?) so much so that they can't behave like a leader but always defend from BN attacks.PKR is already matured enough to also take lead. It's pathetic to see these 3 parties always defending from BN onslaught.Gentlemen, it's TIME TO LEAD-you should attack BN with ingenuity forcing it to collapse.Keep the attacks, not defence only.
There a people who are not happy with their present representative.
There are people who even quoted " Better the devil you know than the devil you don't know"
Why do Malaysians need to settle for mediocre politions just because we have no choice ?
Some people can't shake the feeling of of distrust for certain parties that represent certain RELIGION n RACE.
Why do Malaysians need to choose between religion n race ?
Is it not better to choose a CLEAN, FAIR ,ORGANISED n EFFICIENT government for all Malaysians ?
Thre are people who feels politicians have SELF SERVING interest with an EGO to boot.
Why must we choose people who is a POLITICIan first than a PERSON who serves the needs of the people first ?
There are also people from BN n PR who are presently not HAPPY at all with the way their LEADERS, who are running the PARTY.
Who says these people need to vote their own party out of loyalty or be branded a traitor or that they need not vote ?
Let's give them a choice too.
For now the 3rd must work with PR coz they are the weaker side. It must not go into 3 corner fight as that would definitely benefit BN for sure.
How come we gave BN 50 years but with PR we only decided that 2.5 years is enough. Come on, we should be more resonable the PR. At least give them the full 5 years term, so that they can to the job properly.
I left UMNO 25 years ago to support PAS and PR. I don't mind giving my vote to DAP even i'm a bit secptical to people like Karpal and Kit Siang due to their views on Islam. However, I know for the fact that within DAP there are many young leaders that are more open minded and can sit togther with PAS people for the seek our our country.
Let give PR a chance to prove themselves. Support them to make our country a better place for our children and future generation.
I started a facebook group for Msians abroadto coms back to vote in the 13th GE http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/group.php?gid=289932941808&ref=ts
All this 3rd force ideas is basically "Counting your chickens before they are hatched".
I do not support a 3rd force now because we must understand who is the incumbent/enemy here. Its......UMNO/BN.
Once the people know the power of their vote and that the people can rally together to change a govt they don't like, then that will be the sea change in the mindset of Malaysians that I am looking for. With this mindset change, it does not matter for PKR to come into power and then don't fulfill the rakyats wishes. The rakyat knows they can and will change PKR and place BN (who will definitely be a changed coalition and perhaps even become non-race based), if PKR does not fulfill the rakyats wishes.
The final solution is for the rakyat to wake up and know they can actually choose and GET the govt they want.
The 3rd force has always been there. Just that without the internet before, the 3rd force could not be brought together. Now, with the internet, it is so convenient and so effective to harness these power.
Even without an official UMBRELLA it can work its magic to a certain extent. With a strong and honourable personality leading the movement, it can gather pace and power very quickly.
Please, whoever you are and whereever you are, please step forward. (NOT MAHATIR please).
A third 'political force' will not work. Simply because our election system is neither free nor fair.
Gerrymandering has allowed UMNO to create many safe seats with only a several thousand voters, whereas opposition seats have many tens of thousand of voters. Thus in reality, PR would need at least 60% of total votes to form a simple majority govt.
Govt. funds and machinery are also misused to bribe many rural and uneducated voters. This are funds that PR and a third force would never be able to match.
Finally, the civil servants have been ingrained to always support and be obedient to UMNO. It would be hard for PR/third force to penetrate this vote bank.
Therefore, a competing third force would be disastrous. Instead, the third force should complement PR not oppose it.
In other words what we need is not a third force that is seeking to take control of putrajaya. Instead what we need is a third force that is committed to wide ranging reforms but willing to accept PR in control of Putrajaya.
This third force should only offer up independent candidates in cases when they feel the candidates offered by PR to be inappropriate.
