The last several weeks have been the most depressing to the proponents of real reforms in the country. Genuine activists have been working very hard to fight for justice and fair play in so many areas e.g. minimum wage, against corruption, police brutality, custodial deaths, illegal conversion cases, rule of law, free and fair elections, press freedom, against racism, against draconian laws, etc.
Some of these activities were harshly treated by the authorities. Imagine Burma and imagine recent police actions against peaceful demonstrations and cake parties! In Malaysia, Aung San Suu Kyi might not have been allowed to speak to thousands of her supporters like she did last week when she was released in Burma. Is the ruling regime in Malaysia worse than the Burmese junta?
Apart from some big sounding and scary amount of money announced for several big ticket public projects, the ruling government has not offered the people any kind of solid policy or institutional reform.
Yet, some Malaysians and some leaders in the opposition movement have started to lose their focus and mission. The mess created by leaders in the opposition fighting over menial political positions and self interests are beginning to make us feel that this country is again slipping into the same hole which has buried our sense of justice and fairness for decades.
Opposition politicians have been riding on the reform platform to win over voters and triumph in elections. What we need from them now is to embrace the reform spirit and help to contribute to the forces which are trying to free this nation from its ills. They should not contribute to the ills because they had benefited from the reform forces in the 2008 GE.
It is unfortunate that these self-centric politicians had hijacked our reform agenda with the political mess and controversies they had created. Worse, blind supporters of these politicians are trying to brain wash us that we cannot achieve our reform agenda without them. These supporters should remind their idols that the reform agenda is beyond and above any personality or individual.
Whoever wins the party elections is not going to give Sharmala a fair trial, or Beng Hock his justice and retribution or PKFZ it's money back.
We need leaders who are real activists whose mission is to free this society and nation from it's ills, weaknesses and injustices. We do not need power suckers who are only concerned about their own legacy and ego.
Malaysians, we should stay focused on our reform agenda and not the political noise polluters. With the kind of opposition members we have no wonder Barisan feel that they are back in business.
Without any real reform, this is a bad news for all of us.

You are spot on and like many others, we feel the same way as per your writing. Many had written on their blogs and make comments and tweet about as what you had stated "most depressing to the proponents of real reforms in the country" BUT no PR leaders up till now are listening.
We can just hope that after Zaid and PKR party election fiasco had died down, all the PR leaders will come to their senses and work something out fast.
PKR TRULLY NEEDS IMMEDIATE OVERHAUL !
PKR & Anwar is the cement between DAP and PAS. With PKR in shambles now,any general elections now will see more in fighting for seats within the party which will further make Pakatan weaker.
The voters will be able to see this trend and the 2 party system just a dream and might then abandon Pakatan.
Hi everyone,
All the PR top leaders should sit down and discuss how best to get back on-track the reform agenda that the people so dearly desire!
Stay focuss on entrenching the 2-party/coalition system. No individual is indispensable, be it Zaid or Anwar Ibrahim or anyone else, though AI is the best person we have to gel the component PR parties together, but a second echelon leadership should be in place and presented to the people by the next GE to cement the 2-party system.
PKR is another UMNO duplication.
All their leaders are waiting to form their own gravy train to rob the Rakyat.
I will vote for the Third Force this time to teach Pakatan some lesson.
Politicians are just that - opportunists and without principle. If you are one and want to remain one you have to join the bandwagon. That includes bloggers too, and this is well demonstrated by your current crop of bloggers turned politician!

Your last sentence "..real reforms.." is the same as the eternal howling of some armchair-politicians-wanabe and some so-called concerned bright bloggers. Why don't these same people go shouting at the gates of the mighty BN and have the cannons pointed your way. Pakatan is not yet bequeathed with federal power but yet you talking-dolls demand PR for "real reforms". If beloved LIM C.E. could do that when he captured Penang, he wouldn't have opted to bridge with BN in the first place. Come on man, you gentle Malaysians out there, pls have a kind heart and patience for Pakatan like the way you first voted for them in GE12. We couldn't even succeed in persuading BN to change their evil ways for the last decades, why hammer PR in just less than 3 years. It is never easy to be an opposition politican ( wait till Zaid forms his own party, we'll see ) in Malaysia these days. Party quarrel is like family affair. We don't need to interfere if we aren't members. People, does that also mean if UMNO/BN have no internal struggles, you still trust them to rule our country? If we read too much into party/internal politics then we're not yet politically expedient no matter how many uni degrees we accumulate. Wisdom shapes a brain, not paper.
Consider what Dato Khalid Ibrahim is doing, against great odds, in Selangor. He is trying very hard to get back the assets stolen from the state by Syabas and UMNO cronies. If PR can into power, once the heads of the various UMNO lap-dogs are changed, we shall see results. Only worry, we have to build more prisons.
Dear Mr.Khoo,
I dont know what are these PR leader(DAP and PKR) trying to do or thinking.I am very sad and disappointed that these are same people we hope that they can change our life for better in next GE, are not much different from BN. Keep in mind that they have not even reach Puterajaya yet!
catch 22
Too many PR politicians becoming self-centred and having big egos, forgetting the big picture i.e. topple the BN/UMNO regime ,to serve the poeple better. Most are more concerned with "what's in for me" than "why i am in politics in the 1st place".
Politicians tend to use issues to their advantage to gain position and publicity rather than gunuinely care about the issues or their human sufferers/victims.True reformist are few and they then to be consistent and principled.
PKR,Anwar and Zaid are all opportunists.Anwar was with the evil regime before, now with opposition just because he didn't get to be PM.Zaid is the "Incredible Sulk" of the opposition because he could not become No.2 in PKR.Azmin is just another photostated UMNO politician in PKR. I rather put my money with DAP and PAS.
Real hope for reform is with DAP,PAS,all NGOs,pressure groups and Bloggers.
I am very angry. I am working away from Malaysia and would spend money to go back to vote for the Pakatan but I don;t like what I see in the PKR lately.
I see a real chance to change the UMNO government but I hardly am convinced that PKR would not be like UMNO.
The Pakatan knew that they got a real chance to form a gov i next election. So these politician obviously wish to acquire high post in their respective party because they knew that the reward is high posts like ministers post in the federal gov. So in a sense there is no difference from BN politicia, these Pakatan politician are going all out for their self interest. The best is to get rid of Anwar and Zaid together as they are former UMNO products
