UiTM Lofty Target to Create Nobel Prize Winner

Vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar said Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) is aiming to produce the first Malay to win the Nobel Prize, through guidance and advice from renowned Pakistani scientist Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman.

I am trying to understand and digest Dr Sahol's enthusiasm and huge ambition. Perhaps, he was inspired by Steve Jobs to dream big and aim for the impossible. Unfortunately, Dr Atta's advice and guidance alone is not going to help UiTM achieve it's aim anytime soon.

Dr Sahol said the university is unique and has the possibility to achieve the target. For UiTM and the country's own good, we certainly hope so. However, upgrading the university's centre of excellence and R&D in scientific technology alone is not going to help much.

The university needs to embrace diversity, open up to a world's of knowledge, attract world-class researchers of all races and creed and practice meritocracy and real innovation. Universities which had produced Nobel Prize winners have had decades if not centuries of R&D background.

A baby step which Dr Sahol should take is to take UiTM in the league of Top 400 universities in the world. This would be a more measurable and realistic target.

Prof. Dr Abu Bakar would be better off saying that UITM is striving for better world class standards for all its students,by getter world class acedemians to teach at UITM.Top univesities and colleges with good academians produced good graduates.

Seldom do they think of progress is small realistic steps. I doubt Nobel prize winners, dream of the prize per-se, but concentrate more on research. Their target was new knowledge and research, with Nobel prize as the icing on the cake.

Malaysia is good at dreaming and keep dreaming !
It will never ever win a noble prize, not even being considered, may be one that is put together by Malaysia. The NEM ( Not Enough Money ) prize and only for the half breeds Umno made Malays or the descendants of the Indonesian pirates.
Dr. Sahol can try but remember dreams are only illusions and free, he forgot that Malaysia is currently facing a huge shortage in men of professionals and is sending a team of officials going round the world to plead to the Immigrated professionals to return to serve in Malaysia. This has actually gone on for years and failed badly but instead of looking into the reasons why it had failed. Typical of the deceitful and corrupted Umnoputra they think that by offering more financial incentives they will be able to achieve their aims.
They refused to address the real causes why their pleads are not attracting the immigrated ex-Malaysians (mainly non Malays) they just come up with additional finances as an added incentives plus even for just a few year in desperation I might add.
I can tell you that the scheme will not work, why did these professionals leave Malaysia in the first place ? Once beaten two shy ever heard of it !
Dr. Sohol should instead try to generate, if he can, enough of the professionals the country needs and stop talking and dreaming.
Steve Jobs as a non caucasian did not need any
NEM to help him think big but was trained to do so. Why can't the Malays do the same, may be I am asking too much of the handicapped on wheelchairs. Can the dogs and the pigs fly like the birds ? So Dr. Sohol stop dreaming and talking even tough dreams and talks are free.

Instead of daydreaming, it would be better for Sahol to encourage UiTM students to attend the HIMPUN this weekend. Afterall, UiTM students are infamous for their herd-mentality (otak lembu).

Why don't the govt support U.Malaya, being the oldest in our country? Does it mean that the govt will give priority to UiTM so now that UiTM has announced its intention?

Just to share this...

Malaysia boosts university R&D - SciDev.Net - http://www.scidev.net/en/news/malaysia-boosts-university-rd.html

Malaysia boosts university R&D
Ella Syafputri
24 September 2007

Malaysia has allocated RM12 billion (US$3.5 billion) in its 2008 budget to research and development (R&D), and commercialisation of science and technology in universities.

Most of the money will go to four research universities: Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Each will receive at least RM400 million (US$116 million) for their research programmes.

And under new proposals, researchers will receive an 80 per cent royalty payment on any research that is successfully commercialised, reported The Star newspaper.

Researchers currently receive 50–70 per cent royalties.

You be the judge.

Shalom.

Have you met him and discuss with him in detail on how he is going to achieve the objective?

I guess you have not!

So, I also guess that you are a 'prophet of sort' because you know things even before it happens.

If Prof.Dr Abu Bakar can get UITM to the standards of UM before the race quota was implemented,he should be appointed a senator and made the next Education Minister.Career politicians should be given the boot.Just look at our educational standards. It has gone to the dogs.

Our unemployable local graduates are only fit for the bloated civil service and our equally bloated GLCs. The Professor should try to address this first before he dreams further.

A Malayan was already nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1935!

Dr. Wu Lien-teh (伍连德,1879 – 21 January 1960) was a Malayan-born Chinese and the first medical student of Chinese descent to study at University of Cambridge. He was also the first Malaysian Chinese nominated to receive a Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1935.
