Dap's Extended Honeymoon in Penang

Susan Loone of Malaysiakini was right to note that Dap had lost an opportunity to address its plan and blueprint for Penang during the party's recently concluded state annual conference. Dap leadership and members should have used the opportunity to discuss some crucial state centred issues such as strategy to mitigate looming economic slowdown, job creation, curbing inflation, improving local authority services and enhance public transport.

Prior to the 2008 general election, the party was at the forefront in promoting and advocating local council election. What has happened to the pledge? Did the party leadership do anything substantial to prepare the state for local council elections? Leaders who were at the forefront of the campaign such as Sec-Gen Lim Guan Eng, MP Liew Chin Tong and others should help explain why the pledge was not being fulfilled.

A number of us who had helped in the drafting of the Penang Development Blueprint would like to know the status of the report. Surely Dap does not need to take 4 years to come out with its own socio-economic development blueprint for Penang.

For voting in a new government, surely we have the right to know how the new government intends to lead us differently from the past ineffective Gerakan leadership under Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Nevertheless, the Dap state leadership has done well to reduce deficit and strengthened the financial position of the state. It had introduced several measures to reduce the use of plastic bags, no car day for a particular stretch in the city, provided RM100 for elderly citizens and others.

Dap has done remarkably well to sustain the support of the Chinese voters, however the party must take cognizance of a potential erosion in non-Chinese support. Two main problems already emerged among the Malay voters. First, a lack of Malay centric agenda to help uplift their social and economic status will cause some Malay voters to swing their support back to a Malay patronage leadership under Gerakan or MCA. Second, rapid private housing development on the Penang island, higher inflation and cost of living and a lack of job opportunities are pushing a lot of Malays to the edge of the island.

Lim Guan Eng's government has been to overly focused on the island as an engine of growth for Penang. His administration had proposed a few initiatives such as sPICE, education hub and a theme park - all centred on the island. Both the education hub and theme park are supposed to be located at Balik Pulau, almost the last bastion of Malay hinterland on the island.

A lack of emphasis on the mainland is going to create a distortion of prices and cost of living between the two zones - Penang Island and Seberang Prai - which are separated by just a bridge less than 20KM.

There are several issues confronting Dap and Lim in the immediate term:
1. A lack of new socio-economic model for Penang
2. Job creation and retention/attraction of young & skilled workers to work in Penang
3. Escalating housing prices and marginalization of the poor/urban lowly paid workers
4. Losing Malay support due to a lack of Malay agenda (not NEP but true capacity building programme)
5. Institutionalization and decentralization of power from the CM office by hiring the right talents to assist the government on its programmes and projects
6. Revitalizing George Town
7. World Heritage City strategy and plan for sustainable development, restoration and conservation

Dap has done very well on a number of areas but it may still fall short of evaluation if the party leadership does not start to take on bigger issues and provide a steady leadership. We know that the party can stand up against UMNO and it's extreme tendencies but this cannot be the sole selling point.

The party has set up a high-powered panel to resolve the spat between Ramasamy and Karpal Singh, we hope the party will set up a high powered panel to address Penang's position amidst the weakening global economic climate in 2012.

Dap is also a political party, just like the deceitful and corrupted Umno politicians. I said this many times before I hope and pray that none of my descendants will ever become a politician.
The Dap here has yet to prove they are just as corrupted as the morons from Umno that is the only thing they are, at present, seen to be a better choice than the proven corrupted Umno morons. Already just look at the infighting amongst them even before they are in control of the country. The choice now is between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Still the deceitful and corrupted Umno morns need to be taught a lesson even if Dap and Anwar are not better choices ! Surely there are more creditable choices out there than these lusty and lying Anwar and mad dog LKS as opposition leaders !

So are you saying the people should vote back UMNO-BN???

I dare say what DAP-Pakatan in 3 years beat UMNO-BN for the last 50 years.

Please wake up. Progress is an on-going thing. Not all things can be solved immediately.

Of course you would say this is no excuse. But the question is do you want to regress????

DEAR SIR,

99.99% OF THE POLITICIANS ARE SWEET TALKERS, WITH MANY UNKEPT PROMISES, LYING EVERYWHERE AND EVERYDAY. WHATEVER, WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO PUT PR INTO POWER THAN TO LET UMNO PLUNDERING THE NATION FURTHER.

SURELY A BETTER PARTY OR LEADERS WILL EMERGE AFTER GE13 AND WE CAN ELECT THEM COME GE14.

DAP FAILED MISERABLY IN PENANG TO HELP THE MALAYS. EVEN THOUGH THE PERIOD IS 4 YEARS, THERE IS NO BLUE PRINT BY DAP TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. DAP FORGOT THAT IN ORDER TO WIN PENANG, THE MALAY VOTES ARE CRUCIAL.

GERAKAN WHILST IN PENANG DID THE WORSE, COLLABORATE WITH UMNO TO CHEAT THE MALAYS AND THE INDIANS. DAP HAS NO REAL AGENDA FOR THESE TWO RACES, BUT MERELY A DEVELOPMENT AGENDA FOR PENANG, I.E. TO ENRICH THE RICH AND TO FLEECE THE POOR OF THEIR LAND RIGHTS THROUGH THE LEGAL WAYS.

In 3 years, the opposition have done exceptionally well in ironing out Penang's degrading condition, governence transparency while bolstering its financial portfolio. Turing around a company in that period is tough job. Turning around a state is EXTRODINARY.

Please note that this is not the job of one man (ie. LGE) but all Penangnites that have the same vision of a better Penang, and current state government merely understands and gives it.

I would agree that DAP did not address the social economic gap that is building due to excessive development on the island. But given time, I believe attention will be given to these areas.

I agree with several of the responses. DAP & LGE took on 50 years of neglect & deep-seated bad attitudes in Penang.

They are NOT miracle workers to undo all that in 4 short years.

You claim they have no plan. Getting your own house in order and in working condition is always the FIRST plan of action. Their house is the state administration. I am already surprised that they have managed that rather well compared to the near chaos in Selangor. However, many deadwood are still lying around. Worse, obstacles in their way. Further, their hands are tied by PSC, a Federal institution, whose job is to see them fail.

Compare DAP in Penang and Singapore under LKY in 1965. LKY did not inherit 50 years of garbage, yet how long did he take to straighten Singapore? Four years?

What do you mean by marginalising the Malays? Isn't all the aid given to the people of Penang, the majority of the receivers are Malays?
Those under the poverty line getting aid the RM100 handouts to newborn babies are a few examples.

What about the article not long ago about contractors getting most of the contracts in Penang are Malays? That gave Gerakan some ammo to make big noises.

As a fresh grad who just found a job, I think Penang has a lot of job opportunities. In fact,I think we are under supply. Seeing as times are hard, I'd say that is better than what most states can say.

Am I missing something?

The only way to rid this country of institutionalised corruption is to ensure that those corrupt political and civil opportunists, be they from or favouring BN or PR, have to pay for their ill gotten gains instead of getting away scot-free as with the present arrangement.

In the past, South Korea and Taiwan used to have some of the most corrupt regimes. Today, we see ex-presidents of those countries being prosecuted and spending their time in jail for their greed.

That can only happen if the power of the central government alternates between adversary parties.

That is why it is important for all Malaysians to send BN to the opposition bench for at least 2 terms to rid the coalition (especially UMNO) of all its irredeemable ills.

I agree with Remie. Penang did exceptionally well with all the sabotagers at work. I did not expect LGE to do that well, but he did more than I expected. Reducing debts and not increasing debts is no mean feat. The malays in Penang in fact get more projects under PR. Formerly only the cronies in BN can get projects. Now ordinary malays also can get govt. projects through open tenders proposed by LGE. LGE did not give projects to his cronies. Important thing must be a clean govt. Internal squabbling between members do not matter as much.

Supposedly, Khoo Kay Peng become CM after GE13 and appoint among others Susan Loone and Din Merican as Penang exco; WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO PENANG? I am afraid mega pirates created even bigger than BN!

DAP lead state government is at least doing a better job than Gerakan lead state government. The lesser corruptor is still better than corruptor.
